Can you personalise a large bulk mailing?

Can you personalise a large bulk mailing?

Large print runs used to mean one version for everyone, but that’s no longer the trade-off. Bulk mail can be personalised right down to the imagery, copy and offers on each piece to help spark reader interest. The Mailing People’s bulk mailing services use digital print and variable data to keep large campaigns personal, whatever the volume. Just because it’s a large run doesn’t mean your campaign can’t be personalised.

What can actually vary?

Using digital print, several elements can change from one piece to the next in a campaign. This goes well beyond swapping in a name. Full-colour printed envelopes, tailored images and bespoke copy can all vary piece by piece, alongside multiple personalised inserts in the same mailing. Examples include:

  • Name and address
  • Salutation
  • Imagery
  • Copy blocks
  • Offers or codes
  • Full variable data across the whole piece

How personalisation works alongside data cleansing

Personalisation is only as good as the data behind it. Before printing starts, your list is checked for duplicates, incomplete or invalid postcodes, addresses registered with the Mailing Preference Service, gone-aways and deceased records. Each of these matters more once personalisation is involved, as a wrong salutation or an offer sent to someone who’s moved stands out far more than a generic letter would.

The Mailing People does data audits to catch these issues early, which can save hundreds or even thousands of pounds on print, fulfilment and postage, especially on mailings you plan to repeat.

Where personalisation stays cost-effective

Personalisation itself doesn’t have a volume ceiling. It’s handled through digital print and automated enclosing, which can process up to 10,000 envelopes an hour, or around 160,000 a day. That’s enough capacity to keep personalisation running at real bulk-mail volumes without slowing production down.

What changes with scale is the choice between print methods, not whether personalisation is possible. Digital print supports variable data at any quantity, so it’s the right route whenever personalisation matters. Litho only makes sense if there’s no personalisation, since it locks the design for the whole run – it comes into its own on very large, uniform print runs where every piece is identical.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Personalising the wrong field: A tailored offer means little if it’s matched to the wrong record.
  • Working from unclean data: Duplicates, gone-aways and outdated addresses turn personalisation into wasted print and postage.
  • Over-personalising: Piling on too many variable elements can slow production and add cost without improving the response.

Getting it right at scale

Clean the data first, then decide how many elements to personalise; that order keeps both cost and quality predictable. Our bulk mailing services guide covers the wider preparation steps in more depth.
