Digital printing can be more cost effective for lower volume items, and single sheet printing. For example, typically, digitally printing up to 4,000 single-sided sheets of A4 can be more cost effective and quicker than litho printing. Litho printing can be more cost-effective for multipage items such as booklets, magazines or catalogues where binding or stitching is required. This is typically from 500 copies upwards.
Litho printing is more cost effective for higher volumes, and generic items that do not require personalisation or variables. Digital printing gives you the flexibility to enhance a direct mail campaign by adding in variables from personalisation of names, variable telephone numbers, URLs, QR codes, calls to action etc. This level of personalisation can significantly increase engagement and improve response rates.
Digital printing uses toner-based inks that are fused onto the paper using heat. It prints directly from a digital file, such as a PDF or variable data, making it ideal for short runs, fast turnaround times, and personalised printing. Litho/offset printing uses liquid inks that are transferred via metal plates – one for each colour. The ink is applied to the plate, passed onto a rubber blanket, and then pressed onto the paper. The method is best suited to larger print runs and delivers consistent, high-quality results.
Digital printing can be more sustainable for lower volume print runs, as it doesn’t require a minimum quantity. This helps reduce overproduction and waste.
